After about 2 million years of evolution, you would think that by now our species would have - well - evolved. However, researching some of the highlights of the last 12,000 years of documented history, I’m convinced that our Creator should have stopped with the Chimpanzee...
As a whole the Homo-Sapien is a mess…
Since Mosses came down from Mount Sinai with - what truly was a simple recipe for how we should/could be conducting our daily lives - let me recap…
“You shall have no other gods before Me.” From which point the ancient Greeks created 12 and so did the ancient Romans who obviously did not get the Jewish memo. So, 24 additional gods later responsible for everything from fertility to crops, finance, trade, music, healing and weather and more…
“You shall make no idols.” Which the ancient Jews promptly ignored…
3. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.” Maybe not, but globally there’s an impressive list of all kinds of creative profanity in every one of our 7,151 languages and dialects…
4. “Keep the Sabbath day holy.” I don’t know about an actual holy-sabbath, but there’s a whole lot of folks lounging nearly every day ‘working’ diligently not to work…
5. “Honor your father and your mother.” This is a tricky one because honoring our future/the next generation is important too and when I see gangs of youth robbing stores, I wonder who are their parents? Parenting is ‘work’ it’s another career. So, if you’re a dentist or a hair stylist [etc.] and have children, you have a second job. And today, far too many parents with a fixation on their phone, who’s parenting their kids? Who’s teaching our young children values and life skills?
6. “You shall not murder.” Now I would have thought this included war, any war but we have managed to set this commandment neatly aside century after century, including contradictions like ‘holy-wars’ - remember the Crusades? Why? Well, history is packed with a pope or king here or an emperor or president/prime minister there, who decided to plunder the territory of another country etc. - you know several of the stories…
7. “You shall not commit adultery.” Oh gosh…Well Henry VIII started a trend that continues to this day, keeping family court judges and attorneys gainfully employed…
8. “You shall not steal.” My goodness, thanks to increased technology and digital currency that kind of behavior is easier than ever…
9. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” That means don’t exaggerate, don’t make up stuff, don’t lie…
10. “You shall not covet.” Eny is corrosive and pointless. My dad once told me that if someone has something that I see as important then I can ‘earn’ whatever that something is too.
SO, as a wee reminder, this is the top-ten in the conduct list that the human species should/could have been following—but clearly has not. Which brings us to the last quarter of 2023, and what has changed?
How are we doing? Still poorly…
Besides Russia/Ukraine added to Iran/Israel - current global news of the day includes no less than 10,000 armed conflicts from 9,000 wars to 900 conflicts to 100 skirmishes. Thanks to CNN and the BBC those of us in North American can keep up with most. But it’s so overwhelming at times that we can be forgiven if we escape via reruns of the “Golden Girls” or “Sanford & Sons”.
Closer to home the ‘kids’ in the 118th Congress have conveniently forgotten their job. Confidence gets so much more accomplished than ego. But ego is clearly driving the lack of maturity among those WeThePeople hired to manage America’s business affairs. The have all forgotten that it’s ‘not’ about ‘them’ - it’s about the country they pledge to ‘serve’. Hmmm… If they can’t vote for a speaker then my plan for 2024 is not to vote for them, again. No incumbent running for reelection next year gets my vote - so there…
